Goddess identity[]

Zhurong is the Red Emperor who governs the south and has the highest status among the gods except Taiyi. She is the goddess of the south, fire, ocean, sun, stars, summer and war believed by the people of Shenzhou. Chihunu is another commonly used name for Zhurong.

Character background

Zhurong is the goddess of the south, fire, ocean, sun, stars, summer and Mount Hengshan believed in by the people of Chixian Shenzhou. She is also the assistant minister of Yan Emperor, the goddess of sun and fire, one of the ancestors of gods, the ancestor of the Chu people, and the Red Emperor.

"Guoyu·Zhengyu" records that Zhou Taishi Bo discussed the situation of the rise and fall of the world in the late Western Zhou Dynasty for Zheng Huan Gong. When talking about Chu, he said:

“Zhu Rong was also able to show the brightness of heaven and earth, and gave birth to gentle and talented people. After him, there were no marquises in the Zhou Dynasty... Rong's rise was due to the Mi surname!”

“Mi surname Kuiyue, not worth mentioning, barbaric Mi, only Jing really has a bright virtue, if Zhou declines, it will surely rise. Jiang, Ying, Jing, Mi, are actually related to the generations of the various Ji.”

Jing is Chu, and Jing Mi is the royal family of Chu. "Shiji·Zheng Shijia" says: "In the past, Zhu Rong was the fire chief of Gao Xin clan, and his contribution was great, but he did not rise in the Zhou Dynasty, because Chu was his descendant."

It clearly points out that the royal family of Chu is the descendant of Zhu Rong.

Zhurong is the god of the south and the goddess of fire believed by the gods, immortals and witches of Chixian Shenzhou. He uses the red bird and the dragon as his servants. He also has the status of the goddess of the sun. The "Classic of Mountains and Seas" says that Chongli is in the Sun and Moon Mountain, and Li's son Ye (xu) can travel the sun, moon and stars. The "Baihutong" says: "Yandi is the sun, and his god is Zhurong", so it is clear that Zhurong and Chongli are the gods of the sun.

The Zheng Yu says: "Li was the fire chief of Gao Xin clan. He was pure, brilliant, and great. He was bright and virtuous, and his light shone through the four seas. Therefore, he was named Zhurong." Who else could "shine through the four seas" if not the sun god? This is also the result of the incomplete embellishment of the myth. The sun is the essence of yang fire (Huainanzi Tianwen Xun), so the sun god is also the fire god. The Shiben says: "Zhurong made a market", which means "the sun was the market", and Zhurong was the sun god.

As the goddess of the sea, this goddess is also the god who manages the South China Sea. The fire god Zhurong is worshipped as the god of the South China Sea, mainly because the south belongs to fire in the theory of the five elements. "Guan Zi·Five Elements" says: "In the past, Huangdi...got Zhurong to discuss things in the south." Zhurong was in charge of the affairs of the south, so she also served as the sea god of the south.

Han Yu wrote in the Epitaph of the Temple of King Guangli, the Southern God, that "the sea is the largest thing between heaven and earth. Since the Three Dynasties, all the holy kings have worshipped it. According to the biographies, the Southern Sea God is the most important, above the three gods of the north, the east, and the west, and the River God. He is called Zhurong."

Zhurong also has the divinity of the female kitchen god, the city god and the god of war. As the sun god, this goddess can transform into a huge mythical beast, the Candle Dragon. Her sanctuary is in Mount Hengshan, Nanyue.

In "Xian Zhuan Shi Yi", Xue Xuanzhen said: "Zhu Rong resides in Hengfu. "Guixin Miscellaneous Notes" said: "The four gates of Hengyue Temple all have assistant gods, but the north gate is in charge of soldiers and is the most effective." When the Southern Song Dynasty had wars, they would still send officials to offer sacrifices and open the north gate. "When the country had a major war, the court would send envoys to open the Nanyue Temple and borrow Yin soldiers from Nanyue, hoping to win the war.
